La Mesa is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 54,749 at the 2000 census. It was founded in 1869 and officially incorporated as a city on February 16, 1912. Its official flower is the bougainvillea.
La Mesa is located at 32°46′17″N 117°1′22″W / 32.77139°N 117.02278°W / 32.77139; -117.02278 (32.771450, -117.022797). It is bordered by the city of San Diego on the west and north, Spring Valley and Lemon Grove on the south, and El Cajon on the east. It includes the neighborhood of Grossmont.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.1 km² (9.3 mi²). 24.0 km² (9.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (0.32%) is water.
