Costa Mesa is an urban city in Orange County, California. The population was about 117,178 as of January 1, 2010. Since its incorporation in 1953, the city has grown from a semi-rural farming community of 16,840 to an urban city with an economy based on retail, commerce and light manufacturing.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 40.6 km² (15.7 mi²). 40.5 km² (15.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (0.38%) is water.
